Customer Reviews Analysis
In this section, we will be analyzing the customer reviews for the product “Practical Method for Beginners, Op. 599: Schirmer Library of Classics Volume 146 Piano Technique”. These reviews have been written by piano enthusiasts who have purchased and used the product. Let’s take a look at what they have to say:
“I bought this book a year ago and this has been the best investment made as a self-taught piano player. This book offers all the etudes needed to strengthen finger dexterity and improve sight reading skills! I would say this book best suits a beginner to intermediate piano player (ABRSM level 1-5.) Overall, the Czerny OP. 599 is a great supplemental book that offers all the technical music you would need in the beginning years of learning the piano.”
In this review, the customer highlights the benefits of the book for self-taught piano players. They mention that the book contains all the necessary etudes for improving finger dexterity and sight reading skills. They also mention the suitability of the book for beginner to intermediate piano players.
“I am an adult learner who started from ground 0 in piano (and music education) in April of this year (2016). The book I chose to start with was the Alfred Adult All-In-One course Book One. I was really motivated and got to around page 90 of that book in about 3 weeks time. I guess I was trying too hard, my left hand started to hurt. I had to completely stop playing to rest my hand for about 2 weeks. I stopped learning from that book after that, plus I really didn’t like the songs in that book. But by then, I had enough of the very basics to be able to learn to play some of the songs in Burgmuller Twenty Five Easy and Progressive Studies. For theories, I studied The Complete Book of Scale, Chords….. I even practiced using the Hanon book. I learned to play the complete Fur Elise (all three sections) to a fairly OK level. All seemed to go OK, until I came upon this new song. I heard on the radio and found the sheet for it. I spent 3 days on it and could not get past the first half page, I was literally mapping out each note to the fingers and was going note by note, finger by finger. Luckily, I came upon this brilliant young concert pianist Yuja Wang. She plays over 100 concerts every year all over the world and there are many clips of her amazing playing on youtube. In one of her interviews, she mentioned it usually takes her 3 days to learn a new concert piece, the kind that lasts 20, 30, 40 minutes. A light bulb went off in my head, she must not be learning it note by note, finger by finger. Long story short, in China, learning to play the piano is very popular. The serious students go through a very thorough training program that usually starts around age 6. The Czerny books are very much part of that regime. It is said if one masters Czerny book 599, followed by books 849 and then 299, that puts the person in the mid level of piano playing. While I will continue to search for more materials to supplement the three Czerny books, I know I am on the right path now. I needed to get through the past 8 months to be where I am today, I consider that pre-learning. The real learning starts with this book. In case anyone is interested, there are complete sets of training video on youtube for this book.”
In this review, the customer shares their personal journey as an adult learner of piano. They explain their previous experiences with other piano learning materials and how they struggled to learn a new song. They mention discovering the importance of not relying on mapping out each note and finger individually, and instead finding inspiration from a concert pianist. They also explain the popularity of the Czerny books in China and how mastering them can lead to mid-level piano playing. They conclude by recommending this book and mentioning the availability of training videos on YouTube.
“You will see a lot of Czerny pieces available on the web and in videos but they are using a simplified fingering version of the pieces which defeats the purpose entirely. These pieces were designed to make you think and use odd fingering at times to help you grow as a player. By simplifying these pieces to use “logical” fingering, they just become another practice piece that is no better or worse than any other practice piece out there.Get the ORIGINAL arrangements and sweat your way through. These are not performance pieces, these are exercises to make you better overall. You will not master them quickly or easily.Consider it the Dark Souls of Piano pieces. Can be hard as heck but the first time you play it through the way it was intended to be played, you feel really amazing.”
This review emphasizes the importance of playing the original arrangements of the Czerny pieces. The customer argues that simplified fingering versions defeat the purpose of the pieces, which are designed to challenge players and help them grow. They mention the difficulty and the sense of accomplishment that comes with successfully playing these pieces.
This brief review simply states that the product is good, without any further explanation or details.
“Adult learner started from scratch last November. I find this book is well designed and gradually introduces skills that I need. Each exercise introduces something new and the exercises build on each other. I have learned more from this book (so far through exercise 26) than any of my other sources.I do Hanon daily which feels like strength training. Czerny feels like musical training as well as flexibility with finger positions.”
This review is from an adult learner who started learning piano from scratch. They appreciate the well-designed nature of the book and how it gradually introduces the necessary skills. The customer mentions that each exercise introduces something new and that they have learned more from this book than any other sources. They also compare it to the Hanon exercises, highlighting the difference in their training effects.
“Overall, the quality is good except for the printing is a little bit blurry if you check it note carefully. And I am wondering maybe some note like staccato is missing.”
In this review, the customer expresses their overall satisfaction with the quality of the product. However, they mention that the printing is slightly blurry and suggest that some notes, like staccato, may be missing.
“Like all in this series, clean and tidy, polished, does the job probably; but not easy for a true beginner like me.”
In this review, the customer acknowledges that the product is clean, tidy, and polished, while also mentioning that it may not be easy for a true beginner like them.
“Just what the teacher ordered, lol. A series of practice studies to develop technique and strength. I wouldn’t say beginners though, maybe intermediate, and definitely not for younger players or they’ll get bored fast. I recognize some of the studies from the Thompson books (not sure which came first), who used them more as songs that would be better for younger players. But students do get tired of them, but then again, they get tired of Hanon too and, well, “they’re good for you”. Use at your own risk haha.”
This humorous review mentions that the product is just what the “teacher ordered” and is a series of practice studies to develop technique and strength. The customer suggests that the book may be more suited for intermediate players rather than beginners, and advises against using it for younger players as they may get bored. They also note the presence of some familiar studies from the Thompson books and discuss the relationship between student fatigue and the importance of practicing challenging materials like Hanon.
“Exelente para los que ya leen partituras y ya llevan un rato tocando.”
This review is written in Spanish and translates to “Excellent for those who can already read sheet music and have been playing for a while.”
“Sempre consigliati e ben fatti aiutano la crescita dello studente”
This review is written in Italian and translates to “Always recommended and well done, they help the growth of the student.”
“Despite being long dead, Czerny has helped me so much with my piano playing! I feel like I have improved significantly and the results are almost immediate. On top of that, the exercises are fun!”
The customer in this review credits the Czerny book for helping them improve significantly in their piano playing. They also mention that the exercises in the book are enjoyable.
“Die kleinen Stücke vertiefen nicht nur die Technik, sondern auch die Fähigkeit, sich musikalisch auszudrücken. Sets ist genau das, was ich als Anfänger am Klavier brauche. Es ist eine großartige Sammlung von Übungen, die sowohl die Technik als auch die musikalische Ausdrucksfähigkeit vertiefen.”
This review is written in German and translates to “The little pieces not only deepen the technique, but also the ability to express oneself musically. This is exactly what I need as a beginner at the piano. It is a great collection of exercises that deepen both the technique and the ability to express oneself musically.”
Overall, the customer reviews for the product “Practical Method for Beginners, Op. 599: Schirmer Library of Classics Volume 146 Piano Technique” are mostly positive. Customers appreciate the book’s suitability for self-taught piano players, its gradual progression of skills, and the improvement it brings in finger dexterity and sight reading. Some customers mention the difficulty of the pieces and the challenge they pose, which they see as an opportunity for growth. A few customers mentioned minor issues with the printing quality or the suitability of the book for true beginners or younger players. Additionally, reviews in different languages highlight the international appeal and recognition of the book.
